RE_W!LD is a speculative, critical concept that deals with the loss of nature and biodiversity due to soil sealing and land consumption.

Those who could afford it have abandoned our home planet. Those who couldn’t, are stuck on a planet drowning in concrete and steel. But some fight to make Earth into the green and blue marble it once was. RE_W!LD, an initiative by the Interplanetary Government, aims to support Earth’s remaining in- habitants to rewild the urban landscape, by selling pavement- sponsorships to the people who have deserted the planet.

What if “rewilding” was a lucrative business?

» RE_W!LD is an initiative by the Interplanetary Government. Everything we do is rooted in The Living Beings Leaflet for Human®. Our main goal is to make Earth green again.»

Manifesto with their little illustration

The project started with multiple experiments focussing on the care of non-human living beings, for example treating plants as our companions. The result of these explorations and reflections is The Living Beings Leaflet for Human®, a manifesto on which the concept RE_W!LD is based. It includes e.g. considering humans as part of the animal world, not as rulers over it, and managing resources in a way that respects all living beings.

To visualise the context for my project, I created a potential advertisement for RE_W!LD. The film transports the viewer into an alternative, extrapolated reality, where we are looking at Earth from afar—living in space stations or on different planets, having left the disaster we created behind. Finally, the advertisement appeals to the viewers’ consciousness to make amends for the damage they have caused and to release Earth from its grey cage.

app prototype to sponsor the pavement stones

By buying pavement-sponsorships, people can contribute to making the Earth greener paving stone by paving stone. For every stone purchased, native plants are planted in its original place, until entire squares are eventually replaced by a biodiverse meadow.

This system of improving the ecological footprint through the act of consumption/shopping aims to reflect the indulgence of companies that rely on carbon offset schemes as their contribution to solving the climate crisis.

To visualise the process of performing a pavement- trade, an app was created. I chose a currently widely used technology to illustrate that this scenario is not only conceivable in a distant future, but could be a reality already today.

3D model of a rewild environment

After being selected to exhibit my project at NORDES 2021, I decided to experiment with AR and create a conceptual model of a rewilded space. During the exhibition tour, visitors could scan a marker on the pavement and experience what RE_W!LD-ing the square in front of Kolding station could look like.
